HUGE Fire Department Slash Drop-off Event

On June 21, the Fire Department hosted a Slash Drop-off Day for everyone living in the Coal Creek Canyon Fire Protection District (CCCFPD). The 8-hour event was sponsored by Boulder Wildfire Partners and was hugely successful, with 160 residents signing up to drop slash. Folks did significant fire mitigation on their properties, and many dropped off multiple loads. In total, 245 loads were dropped on the helipad by CCC Fire Station #2. Most of those loads were in single pickup trucks or trailers but many came in box trucks or large dump bed trailers. We estimate a total of 2,000 cubic yards of slash were dropped off in just 8 hours. That is enough to cover an entire NBA basketball court with 11 feet of slash!

Where's Cork?

Overall, we had a 78% increase in participants over last year’s event and a 64% increase in cubic yards of slash … very impressive numbers. Last year, Wildfire Partners told us ours was by far the largest volume of slash ever dropped at one of their Fire Department Special Events. Wait until they see what we accomplished this year! We are very grateful to Wildfire Partners for including CCCFPD in the program.

The volunteer crew was small but mighty! In all, 24 big-hearted folks volunteered to help the Fire Department with check-in, traffic control, and to help folks wrangle slash off their vehicles. All on the hottest day of the year so far! (Our yard master even found time in the madness to change a volunteer’s flat tire.) Without the help of every one of you, there is no way we can pull off these events for the CCC community.

Sincere thanks to:

Apologies if we missed anyone!

Kudos to Bobbie Steffe, CCCFD Business Manager, who worked with Wildfire Partners and the chipping vendor to plan and smoothly execute the event. (Bobbie also feeds the volunteers well, which is much appreciated by all!)

Special recognition also goes to the hardworking Community Ambassadors who rallied residents of their Plan Units and held fire mitigation cutting and slash collection efforts in their communities in the days before the event. Other CWPP Community Ambassadors are holding events in their Plan Units, including Wildfire Partners roadside chipping events and community chipping events sponsored by United Power. There are plenty of neighbors helping neighbors all over CCC and we salute you all. As we work toward implementing the recommendations of our Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP), we are helping to make our communities more fire resilient. Adequate clearing of fuels for defensible space around our homes will help our firefighters safely defend them.

Go to our NEW, IMPROVED WEBSITE for step-by-step instructions on how to implement CWPP recommendations for YOUR property and your community, at www.CoalCreekCWPP.org.

With so much community support for the CCCFPD Slash Drop-off Day, the Fire Department will sponsor another event this August. Stay tuned for more information.
